"They say passion burns for a reason, and when it comes to affairs it’s not only the protagonists who are hurt."
I personally think this book is very underrated, as I haven’t seen much appreciation for it but I loved this book beyond words. I am not even slightly exaggerating when I say this book hurt me more than I could have even imagine. In the starting it’s a little dry but as story proceeds it totally grips your heart and it is impossible to stop turning pages. The story is set in 1960s and writer has explained thoroughly the lifestyle of people back then. Also tells about the social culture, norms and expectations of that time period, glimpses of a patriarchal society where a women was not supposed to have any opinion and we’re considered only capable of decorating themselves and having no intellect whatsoever. It’s a story about desiring something that you cannot have. A married woman falls for a divorced reporter. The boom tells how and to which extent this affected her life and her husband’s and the lover. How we sometimes make mistakes which not only hurt us but also the people around us .She lost her memory in an accident and for four years she thinks she is responsible for the death of her anonymous lover. After four years they reunite but only to be separated for unbelievably long period of forty years. Yes this was the thing that tormented me the most. Forty years. It was a little too much for me. But worth it I guess? Well the most important thing in this whole novel was , as the title shows are Letters. The passionate letters written by our anonymous lover “B” which reminds me how we have lost the beautiful art of writing letters to our loved ones. The correspondences between were the cause of their reunion after forty years.
The only thing I didn’t like at first was this time gap, but after reading it whole, I didn’t mind it much. Side by side we have a story of yet another woman who’s in kind of same situation and also she plays a vital role in the reunion of the old lovers. Her character is relatable to us as we also sometimes make mistakes but we never want to see them as mistakes and keep on seeing what we want to see rather than what reality is.
Overall it was an extremely nice romance, anyone interested in reading romantic novel should give it a try I guarantee you it won’t disappoint you in any way. But but be prepared for a lot of heart breaks here and there, however, for sure there’s an almost happy ending.
Also there is a movie adaptation of the book available as well so you can watch that too.
It’s the thing about wanting something you can’t have. And that thing of never being able to say what you really feel.
